I can't say enough about this movie. 1988 was a highlight year. This movie has developed a cult following, and I have been a part of it since 92. The acting is horrible and the editing is horrendous, but the fighting scenes in this movie are awesome. I think this was before Van Damme went crazy and starting hitting on women, but this is classic JCVD. Knockin' gold teeth out of people's mouth, being strung to a tree, the "monkey fighter", Chong Li and his dancing pecs, the power of the reporter's vagina to inspire Dux to break the rules of the Kumite, Forrest Whittaker pre-Oscar, Frank Dux's American stereotype friend Ray Jackson, the predictable story line, the soundtrack, all of it.
I got a question, though: Frank Dux escaped the Armed Forces to fight in the Kumite in Hong Kong. Of all the people the Armed Services could have sent after him, they send 2 bumbling idiots whose only weapon of having a chance of getting him are antiquated tasers. Let's not even touch on the fact that they are way too old to be doing this and have no sense of culture. Why it seems to be this whole "black man is there, but the old white man is in charge" thing, I have no idea.
