Okay, so I guess you all know about Don "Nappy Headed Ho's" Imus and his comments and the backlash that has happened since then. I'm sure some of you wonder if I have something to say about it. I sure do...
Dude's comments are the epitome of asshole. If you listen to the context of the comment, you will hear one of his sidekicks use the term "ho's" BEFORE he does. This tells you that he HAD TIME to think about it or object to it. Did he? Naaaaaahhh. He went ahead with the attack anyway. Also, to add insult to injury, he included a culture-oriented insulting adjective "nappy headed". I say screw this guy (in more vulgar terms).
I think that his firing was appropriate. However, me being a detractor of the shock-jock industry, I guess my opinion is somewhat biased. However, I believe the true motivation of his firing will never be known. Word around the campfire is that he got fired because all his sponsors pulled out, leaving his show no money to be made. If you know that and you know that all network execs put shows on the air TO make money, you would see his firing as a forced issue. The head layer, though, is that he was fired because of his insensitive remarks. Not knowing the REAL thing, though, is that you never know what the deal is. Whether PR move or not, I'm glad he's off. I haven't been a long-time opponent or hater of his, but I support getting his ass off the air.
I think the opponents of a negative backlash should jump in a lake. All this "rappers use the word with no backlash" is hogwash. What these same people DON'T tell you is that 85% of rap music is purchased by white teenagers. Not to say all white teens are racist, but if you're gonna make a claim, FOLLOW THROUGH with it. The studios and music channels look at ratings. As long as people are tuning in and there is ad revenue to be generated, they will continue to show it. Who the hell cares, anyway? Even if rappers say it, does that give you clearance to say it? People have been having the 'N word" debate for decades. I also reference the "if everybody jumped off the bridge, woudl you" cliche'. Screw that.
Point being, dude was rightfully removed from the station. Now, if you will excuse me, I gotta get ready to go to Kenny's.
