Be Real Black For Me
Those of you who are familiar with the new, groundbreaking animated series "The Boondocks" (10pm CST on Cartoon Network) will recognize the above drawing as a Tony Montana'd version of Riley Freeman, younger brother of main character Huey Freeman. What can I say about this show? I love it in almost every sense of the show. It's satirical roots allow it to be wildly entertaining and funny, all the while getting its point across.
They've covered many topics, from Caucasian dinner parties to profiling terrorists to dating prostitutes and even what Dr. King would think of today's society. It is spoken from the mind of the 10-year old African American protagonist, using complete African-American colloquial jargon (including the n word, bleh) and makes no apologies about offending people.
However, it's different in that it doesn't offend just for the sake of offending like a shock DJ on the radio might do. In the end, it all comes back together to teach a very intellectual lesson that might have went over the heads of some people otherwise. I was not an avid reader of the comic due to its lack of New Orleans publication, but thanks to AJ, I am a fan of Mr. Aaron McGruder's work. I applaud what he is striving forward to do and I wish him the best with next season. *loads up season 1 episodes consectutively for a Boondocks marathon*
