Spirit of the Boogie

When I was riding back to New Orleans from a weekend trip I took with my dad to see family in Houston, TX, I gave him a copy of a mix CD I made called "Grown Folks Music." One of the tracks was Grover Washington's classic "Mister Magic." My dad went on and on about how great of a song it is and how it should be a rite of passage for black people (I agree). Part of me just wishes I were around when these songs came out, because all I could do was ask how popular they were when the music was fresh. We grooved and grooved to the music the whole way home.

That's one thing a lot of the new school can't say: that it's timeless. 30+ years later, we're STILL hooked on those early hits that got us on the dance floor. People in my generation still hit the floor for an old fashioned bus stop when we hear Grover's sax riff. It's so powerful and so soulful, it's almost like he's crying through the instrument. The horns, the guitar, the keyboards, it all comes together nicely. The tracklisting for Grown Folks Music is:

  1. DJ Slide - Mississippi Cha Cha Slide
  2. The Ohio Players - Fire
  3. Frankie Beverly and Maze - Before I Let Go
  4. Jeff Floyd - I Found Love on a Lonely Highway
  5. Cheryl Lynn - Got to Be Real
  6. Marcia Griffith - Electric Slide
  7. Mel Waiters - Hole in the Wall
  8. William DeVaughn - Be Thankful For What You've Got
  9. Clarence Carter - Strokin'
  10. Parliament - Flashlight
  11. Grover Washington, Jr. - Mister Magic
  12. Marvin Gaye - Gotta Give It Up
  13. Mr. C - The Cha-Cha Slide
  14. Rebirth Brass Band - Do Whatcha Wanna

That's it. I need to be a DJ for real. Just typing that list out made me want to dance. It's rediculous that I'm sitting on a gold mine of songs and am not sharing it. Screw that. Y'all need a party DJ'ed come holla at me. "I got it for cheap," lol.
