I'm sitting here to the Stylistics' song "One Night Affair", chronicling a man's bout with a one-night stand that ended up in him having the woman's fake phone number. Here's the lyric that gets to me:

"How can it be/She wrote her number down, it's here in front of me/Don't understand, she must've told me a lie..."

Makes me think about people who give out fake numbers. Why do you do it? It would seem to be a damned if you do, damned if you don't. Sometimes, if you don't give them the number, you are hassled until you give them your number to get them off you. Sure, that's all fine and dandy, but as small as the world is nowadays and everybody knowing everybody else, the one off time you happen to see that person again is awkward as hell, and you'll get that one person that will hound you about "yea, I called the number and it wasn't you. *pulls out original paper* is this a 9 or a 4?" Where does the cycle end? Which is better? Letting the person down up front or giving them false hope? What would you want the person to do to you? Do you have to lie to kick it? Be a (wo)man about it and just say no, and be ready to deal with the consequences. That or be hounded the whole night. Your choice.
